Using selected women writers of the 20th Century--with particular focus on the Harlem Renaissance--students will create fiction and non-fiction writing that focus on their lives as female Muslims coming-of-age in 21st Century America. Through cooperative-learning, dialogue, spoken word, and poetry, students will become comfortable with speaking and performing their work.
Meet historic Muslimahs such as Fatima Al-Fihri, founder of Al-Qarawiyyin in Fes, Morrocco and Umm Hani Maryam (1376-1466 CE), We take time to discuss the important contributions of Kadijah (sw), Aishah (sw) and other important women of Islamic practice and secular knowledge. We learn about Muslim immigration to the West and are also honored to welcome several local Muslimah leaders in their fields to share their experiences and mentorship and bring the experience from the past into the present.
As we follow urban water, we take a look at rainwater gardens and collection in the city. Where does all the water go? We tour local urban gardens to get an idea of where our food could come from. We also take time to have a dialogue about our relationship with our Earth as Muslims and as citizens through the lens of equity and self-awareness. "A Muslim who plants a tree or sows a field, from which man, birds and animals can eat, is committing an act of charity." (Muslim)
Take a visit to a local fabric store and pick your inspiration using your own cash allowance. Learn how to budget your money for materials by figuring out product pricing. Project options can include: hijab, sleeve extenders, A-line skirts, pillows, etc. Do you have a favorite hijab or skirt? Bring it in and learn to sew your own version. Work with a local Muslimah shop owner and get to know a bit of the business. No previous sewing experience is required.
